Oklahoma is the home state of the Route's founder, Cyrus Avery. As the Oklahoma highway commissioner, Avery was recruited by the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads to lay out a plan of interconnected byways, which eventually became Route 66. Almost all of Route 66 in Oklahoma can be traveled. Oklahoma has taken the lead in posting historic highway signs throughout the state. Finding Route 66 in Oklahoma is easy if you keep an eye out for these signs. For precise directions across the state, take along Jim Ross' book, "Oklahoma Route 66: The Cruiser's Companion."
